Take the Screen Free Challenge

Nov 12th, 2015 Posted in National Child Day, Uncategorized

Did you know that many children today are spending more time with screens than any other activity but sleeping?  As adults, we are role models to our children. Limit your own recreational screen time and your children will learn to do the same.  Start small and take the screen free challenge!

What is the Screen free challenge?  It can be anything that decreases screen time in your life either at home or at work or both!  Here are some suggestions:

Enjoy a screen free coffee break – Pick a time and day to do it, talk to your co -workers and plan it so everyone knows about it.  Then get to know one another without screens getting in the way.

Make mealtime a screen free zone- do you remember when all meal were a screen free zone?  Talk to one another, ask about each other’s day, tell jokes, ask questions such as “If you could be an animal, what would you be?”  or ” if you could invite a famous person to supper, who would it be and why?”  Be creative!

Track your recreational screen time by using the screen time tracker below.  You might be surprised by the amount of screen time you actually have compared to play time.

Celebrate National Child Day November 20th

Nov 10th, 2015 Posted in National Child Day, Uncategorized

National Child Day is November 20th.  It is a day to celebrate the rights of the child.   The rights of the child are specific rights to protect all human beings under the age of 18.  They are to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.  All children have these rights no matter who they are, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are a boy or a girl, what their culture is whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor.  No child should be treated unfairly on any basis!

In South East Manitoba, we focus on the right to play! Article 31 of the UN convention of the Rights of the Child states that all children and young people have the right to relax and play and join in a wide range of activities.

In today’s society, screen time is getting in the way of play.  As parents, we need to be role models and limit screen time for both children and adults so we can focus more on play time!

Keep it Balanced between screen time and play!
